As you graduate high school and take the next step in your life, it's inevitable
that you are going to leave some friends behind. Some friends you will naturally
grow apart from as you get older, but there are certain friends that you want
to keep in your life. Maybe you moved to a Toronto loft condo while you studied
at the University of Toronto and your best friend decided to go and teach abroad.
Either way, it is tough to maintain friendships when you don't reside in
the same city. In this article you will learn some of the struggles long distance
friendships face along with some ways to overcome them.
Obviously, as distance grows between friends, it becomes difficult to maintain
the relationship. When you move to a new Oakville condominium while your best
friend is still working at the discount postcard printing shop back in Vancouver,
you have a three hour time difference between you. That makes it that much harder
to keep in touch with different work and school schedules.
Let's not forget the fact that you inevitably make new friends when you
move to a different city. You are going to start hanging out with them more
frequently and your long distance friendships will begin to suffer. Of course,
making new friends is going to happen no matter where you relocate, but you
have to understand that your friend that lives on the other side of the country
may begin to feel jealous if you neglect them by always hanging out with your
new pals. It's a good idea to try and touch base every so often so you
don't upset your friend and drift further apart.
Another harsh reality about long distance friendships is that not only does
distance come between you but you can also start to grow apart as well. As you
get older your priorities are going to change and so is your personality. Maybe
you decided to start browsing some Waterloo, Ontario homes and wish to start
a family while your best childhood friend has decided to get their masters.
While children, real estate, and your husband are your favourite things to talk
about, your friend may not be able to connect with you on this level and you
will soon find that you don't share many common interests. This may be
something that is unavoidable, but it could be something that you try to work
on if you want to remain close.
Although there are a lot of things that can get in the way of long distance
friendships, there are also a lot of ways to maintain them with today's
technology. With applications like Facebook, MSN Messenger, Twitter, and Skype
you can always stay in touch with your long lost friends, no matter your hectic
schedule or time difference. You could be browsing through the real estate listings
Troncones, Mexico offers and chat with your friend in Japan at the same time
every single day! So, all of the negative things aside, long distance friendships
are possible in today's technologically advanced world, so take advantage
of it!
