Friends At Work

Since we spend half our time at work, it's important that we enjoy ourselves while we're there. Though doing something we love (or at least enjoy) is crucial to workplace satisfaction, who we do it with can be just as important. Having a great staff can make a job as tedious as installing a vacuum pump system the best day of your week if you do it with friends. But where do you draw the line, and how do you define "friends at work"?

Though having colleagues you consider friends is by no means a bad thing, you need to know where to draw the line. What you do outside the workplace is your own business, but you cannot allow it to affect the way in which you do your job. Professionalism in the workplace is paramount to staff moral, and if you're showing favoritism to someone just because you partied together at a luxury condominium Toronto, then the whole workplace suffers for it. Whether you're a grunt or a suit, everyone wants to feel like they are treated fairly, and when they see favoritism, their motivation to work hard for or with you will disappear.

Don't feel that workplace friendships should be taboo, however. There are many positives to a properly handled workplace friendship. Feeling comfortable around someone takes trust and respect, and you can't always earn both those things within a working environment. Hanging out with co-workers away from the workplace is a great way to get to know one another outside the confines of a professional setting, allowing everyone to relax and be themselves. You can learn so much more about someone when they're off the clock and being themselves, and some of the best friends you'll meet could be through work. Just remember that when you both back to pulling the sling ropes tomorrow, you act as co-workers and not just buddies.

This remains true away from the job as well. What you do with work friends away from the job can negatively effect your professional relationship as well. Don't go investing in Bowmanville real estate together, because if the deal goes bust, so does both your casual and working relationship, and though you can simply walk away from personal relationships, it's not quite as easy to do in the workplace. Not only will a broken friendship impede you from working with your former friend, but it also throws a big wrench into the gears of your team, causing everyone to lose focus and possibly creating a rift through the staff as they pick sides in your personal feud.

Friends at work can make all the difference in a 9-5 lifestyle, but it's important to remember that what happens away from work stays away from work, and vice versa. Professionalism is a vital part of any working relationship. When the whistle blows, though, there's nothing better than heading down to the pub with the staff and having some laughs over a pint. Even if you're in a job like being a nanny Oakville based there could be room for some socializing within work. You just have to know when to draw the line.
